Security Challenges
Retail businesses face security risks that are constant, varied and increasingly difficult to manage without professional support.
Common Challenges
- Shoplifting and organised retail crime
- Vandalism and criminal damage
- Anti-social behaviour from members of the public
- Aggressive or threatening behaviour towards staff
- Fraudulent activity and internal theft
- Emergency situations including medical incidents and evacuations
- Liability exposure from incidents on premises
How Our Guards Can Help
A visible, professional security presence addresses all of these. It deters opportunistic theft, reassures customers, protects staff and demonstrates a commitment to the safety of everyone on your premises. It also reduces the liability risk that comes with being unable to show you took reasonable steps to prevent foreseeable incidents.
SIA Accreditation
What It Means
TMS Protection gives clients two layers of reassurance: company-level SIA Approved Contractor status and individually licensed officers deployed to site.
You are not simply booking a guard. You are working with a security provider that is assessed, checked and structured for compliant delivery.
SIA Approved
Held at organisation level. Every deployed officer also holds a current SIA Licence.
Ongoing Checks
Licences verified weekly against the SIA watchlist.

Individual licences are verified weekly against the SIA watchlist. Annual DBS checks and internal compliance reviews maintain standards throughout the life of the contract.
Licensed Officers
Every guard deployed holds a current SIA Licence for their role.
An SIA Licence is held by the individual officer. Every guard TMS Protection deploys holds a current licence, issued after criminal record checks and role-specific training — held by the officer, not the company.
Approved Contractor
Company-level status confirming recognised standards for vetting, training and delivery.

SIA Approved Contractor status is held by TMS Protection as an organisation. It confirms the business meets the Security Industry Authority’s standards for management, recruitment, training, vetting and operational delivery.
Professional Service
What Our Guards Do
Every officer TMS Protection deploys is directly employed, vetted to BS 7858 and trained in security and customer service. Here is exactly what that means on the ground.
Visible Presence
Uniformed officers deter theft
Read more
Our officers maintain a visible presence at entry and exit points, on the shop floor and at high-risk areas identified during your site survey. Visibility alone reduces opportunistic theft significantly — and it signals to your customers that their safety matters.
Incident Reporting
Incidents logged via SmartTask
Read more
Officers complete incident reports through SmartTask during or immediately after an event — not at end of shift. Each report includes timestamped photographs, officer notes and any witness details. You receive a full audit trail for every incident, usable for insurance claims, police reports and internal review.
Theft Response
Calm, lawful intervention
Read more
When theft occurs, our officers respond in line with both legal guidelines and your specific store policy. We do not escalate unnecessarily. Every intervention is proportionate, documented and designed to protect your staff, your stock and your reputation.
Powers of Detention
Compliant & lawful detentions
Read more
Where lawful detention is appropriate, our officers follow correct procedure precisely — protecting both the store and the officer from legal liability. All SIA licensed officers are trained in the law surrounding detention, use of force and citizen’s arrest.
Police Liaison
Direct liaison with police
Read more
Our officers work directly with attending police officers, providing accurate verbal accounts, written statements and photographic evidence where required. Clear, professional liaison speeds up police response and improves prosecution outcomes.
Emergency Response
Trained to act fast in emergency’s

All deployed officers are trained in emergency response procedures — including medical first response, fire evacuation coordination and lockdown protocols. In a crisis, having a calm, trained professional already on site makes the difference.
FAQ
Retail Security FAQs
Can your officers detain a suspected shoplifter?
Yes, where it is lawful and appropriate to do so. TMS Protection officers are trained in the legal framework governing the detention of suspected shoplifters, including the use of reasonable force provisions and the requirements that must be met before a detention is made. All detentions are documented through SmartTask and reported to you in real time.
Do your officers work in plain clothes or uniform?
Our retail security officers are typically uniformed. A visible, clearly identifiable security presence is one of the most effective deterrents against opportunistic theft. If your store requires plain clothes loss prevention officers for specific operational reasons, contact us to discuss.
Can you provide security for multiple retail sites?
Yes. TMS Protection manages security across multiple sites simultaneously. Each site has its own contract-specific Assignment Instructions and is monitored individually through SmartTask. You have a named contract manager responsible for the overall relationship.
How do your officers handle aggressive customers?
All TMS Protection officers are trained in conflict management and de-escalation. The approach follows a defined process: treat every person with respect and dignity, use body language awareness to identify escalation early, apply de-escalation techniques to encourage calm resolution and use reasonable force only as a last resort. Officers are trained not to escalate situations unnecessarily.
What happens when an incident occurs on site?
The officer follows your site-specific incident response procedures, contacts the control room, documents the incident through SmartTask with photographs and notes and notifies your designated contact. Where police attendance is required the officer liaises directly. You receive an incident report through your client portal as soon as it is submitted.
Can you provide additional security cover during peak trading periods?
Yes. If your security requirements increase during peak periods such as Christmas, Black Friday or sale events, we can scale resource up accordingly. Changes are documented and reflected in your Assignment Instructions.
